app launched at boot not prevents access to login screen

I just installed ColdFusion server w/no problem. I added the command to launch the server in my /etc/local.rc file. I then rebooted the machine. The server comes up fine, but the text output is all over the screen and it won't get to the graphical logon. WHen I start it up from the command prompt, there's a bunch of text output and it doesn't return you to a command prompt. I think that's why I don't get the logon screen, but is there some way to suppress this output and make it run "silent," so to speak?

You may try to run it this way:
program &
It moves the program to background.

Now I can't get out of it so that I can try what you suggested. Ctrl-C, which works for me at the command line gives me the prompt. The only thing that seems to do anything is Ctr-Alt-Del which reboots the system. Infinite loop.

If ctrl+c works for you, use it, edit the configuration files you added the program to and reboot to get normal login. Or I don't understand what you mean?

I'm stuck inside the boot sequence. Normally, if I were running this app from the command line, I could use Ctrl-C.

Which distro is it? If you have an easy way to pass parameters to LILO/GRUB, start 'linux init=/bin/bash'. It should bring you the shell just after kernel. You'd need probably to set PATH to be able to run programs, something like
export PATH=/bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin
Then you should be able to run your favourite editor to edit the file.
