Apacheconf [HELP]

Ok... I am going crazy. I have not installed RH 7.2 nine
times. Yes that is right 9 times! I am trying to set
up a small webserver for a peer based network. I would
like to have a section of the website that can only
be accessed if you have a certain user id and password.
I know I use the .htaccess file in the subdirectory that I
want to protect, but how to I get the server to notice it.
All of the print out say that I should modify the access.conf file, but then the apacheconf program states that I should not modify
any of the files manually.

So, how do I do this with apacheconf? It seems like a easy program to use. I just don't understand how I should fill out the sections. I also don't even know if I just up the network card
properly.

Thanks in advance for the help.
