apache2 pointing to wrong location

centos 6.2 server install
httpd-2.2.15-15.el6.centos.1.i686

I keep my web pages in /www/mysite/html and my home page is in /www/mysite/html/index.html.
but when I go to my site and try a link in a web browser or go to a folder eg: http:/www/mysite.com/folder apache is aiming for mysite/html/folder, which doesn't exist. This is what is showing up in the error log. Why is apache doing this and how can I correct it?

have you checked your default url see if thats the one apache is using? are you using virtual domains? I've seen default urls setup to directories I don't have, and I've had to edit them.

Can you post "/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf" file to see what you have and what needs to change/modify, it would be easier to help.

it sounds like you virtual domains are working for some reason, and the server is defaulting to a default url which is not setup. have you virtual domains ever worked, or is this the first try at it? I would look at the virtual domains and make sure they are setup right. you could also go in an edit you default url to your virtual domain path. if it works you know there is something wrong with the virtual domain setup

Please use the [code] tags around the lines to make it read easier for readers,

Like this

Code:
take a look at the virtual hosts configuration and modify yours accordingly

http:/www/mysite.com/folder will not open the site, because at the Vhost configuration
<VirtualHost *>
ServerName mysite.com
DocumentRoot /www/mysite/html
..

you tell Apache to serve the contents if you point to address:
http://www.mysite.com/folder

then it will open the folder if it's existing under the path:
Code:
DocumentRoot /www/mysite/html/folder

In short :

the difference you are referring to your site with
http:/www/mysite.com/folder <-- wrong

should be as
http://www.mysite.com/folder <-- correct

that exactly the point, it's not opening the folder http://www.mysite.com/folder. If I open a browser and try to go to http://www.mysite.com/folder I get 'access denied' and the error log shows this:
Directory index forbidden by Options directive: /www/mysite/html/folder/.

I think I solved it by doing this:
in httpd.conf I changed all the "/var/www/html" entries to "/www" - that's where I keep all the virtual host folders. The site seems to work fine now.
I also had a corruption in the layout of the page which corrected when I deleted a link to 'redirect.php' Looks like I'll have to cleanup the code with regards to the php I have.

edit: oops, forgot to say...thanks for all the responses I had here.
