Apache Webserver Help on Slackware 9.1

Im trying to learn PHP, and in the tutorial it instucted me to start an apache webserver. Well, I got it started and I was able to access the server via http://localhost. However, the tutorial then told me to create a document that is HelloWorld.php3 and save it, so I did. I was then supposed to be able to access the page by going to http://localhost/HelloWorld.php3. Unfortunately, it said that site was not available. So next I did a bit of research, and found that if I make it under /home/usernamexxx I can access it by going to http://localhost/~usernamexxx/HelloWorld.php3. So I did this, and it came up as a blank page, even though the php page was supposed to echo "Hello World". Does anyone have any idea what Im doing wrong?

have you added php types to your apache config file? i.e., where it says index.html index.htm and so on? also have you added the lines to load and add the php modules?

LoadModule php4_module libexec/libphp4.so
AddModule mod_php4.c

there's also a couple of lines to uncomment in the httpd.conf having to do with php4. then restart apache, apachectl graceful.

>edit: or for php3, if that's what you're using.
