apache iptables inq.

Hello everybody..

I setup 2 virtual host on redhat9 using apache, test sites(internal). for the past week i wouldn't access the webpages from my win2k machine...after cosulting some of the fourms i was asked to modify the iptable...

So, I disabled the IPTABLE. now my other pc(win2k) is able to access the page from redhat machine, so it works.

my question is:
1. now that iptable is disabled did i lose control of what port can be open/closed?

2. i dont have ftp setup but now that iptable is disable is prot 21 and other open to attack?

3.. how do i access the iptable to modify/change port/ip address?

anyhelp u can give me would be greatly appreciated...

Robin,

First no you didnt loose control. If you dont have a firewall than any open ports are open.

Second of all, I know this isnt a quick fix for you but...

Ive been struggling with trying to understand iptables too since I recently installed Debian and recompiled my kernel as 2.4.22. Anyway, I would say that if you have ftp installed on your system it is probably open for attack. I dont know much what commands to use to check for what is running on your box so just google around.

Finally, Im not sure what you mean but you can install your own iptables once you know how to use them. There are of course many to look at and try to understand yourself just google iptables.

Good luck. I find it tough too.
