Apache indexing services not functioning

I'm a relatively new linux user (3 months), and I'm trying to configure a Red Hat 9 Apache 2 server. Whenever I try to connect to my server and there's an index.html file in the directory, it works, but when I try to use indexing services, which is what I ultimately want, it asks me if I want to Open, Save, or Cancel a file download. The download is an HTML file that says
Quote:

You don't have permission to access / on this server.
I've tried everything I can think of, but it doesn't want to show anything except this page. What should I try now?

Welcome to LQ.

Make sure that you have "Indexes" Specified in the "Options" directive within the Directory entry for the directory you are accessing in httpd.conf
If you are unsure then post a copy of your config file.

I finally fixed the problem. I had been editing the httpd.conf file that wasn't the one in the directory being loaded. D'oh!

OK, next question. Is there any way to enable a rudimentary password check when you first access the apache server remotely?
