apache and tomcat

i really dont know much about tomcat so this is a very dumb question but i need to know do tomcat and apache work together or is tomcat dependent on apache or does it run on its own or what

You can run them both, or singly. They both serve up web pages, but Tomcat is more for running Java 'applications' via web sites, whereas Apache can just serve up basic HTML/PHP pages, that don't need Java integration. I'm not an expert on that by any means, but that's the explanation I got. :)
