Apache and SSI?

I'm trying to insert a simple counter into a page on my server, but can't seem to do it. What I'm trying to do right now is put the following code into my index.html
<!--exec cmd='cgi-bin/count.cgi'-->
but its not working. I think I need to enable SSI but i don't know how, is it a mod thats not included by default apache 1.3.2? I guess i'm just completely lost so I could use any help i can get.

nevermind I finally found it, just so this thread isn't a complete waste you have to uncomment the lines

AddType text/html .shtml
AddHandler server-parsed .shtml

and change the Options line in your <Directory "SERVER-ROOT"> also include the Includes key and ExecCGI if you want to be able to execute CGI scripts.

1 more thing

ok so i've got my SSI to work, i'm kind of curious though if theres a way to read all .html's as SSIs so that the extension doesn't have to be .shtml
