anyway to have IE with linux?

I work for a company that requires Internet Explorer to access their website. I would like to have access to it at home to run reports and check status on certain items and pricing.

Is there a way to run an I.E. simulator or something in linux?

Maybe you could try WINE i hear it is an emulator for windows stuff

oneandoneis2 11-04-2005 08:32 AM

WINE stands for "WIne Is Not an Emulator", actually. . .

But yeah, you can use it to run IE

Or you used to be able to run IE under CrossOver Office if you're willing to shell out for it.

mrh7184 11-04-2005 09:06 AM

how do I use wine though?

do i need to install IE or is it an emulator?

Check out Wine HQ website for more details including documentation and download packages. You might find a SuSE package available through YaST, can't remember.

Pretty much ALL the linux web browsers have the option "Browser Identification" somewhere in their config menus. You just set this to "IE Version ..." and you will find that sites that "require" IE suddenly start working. Firefox allows you to do this for selected sites only eg your bank, workplace etc. This is a lot easier than installing wine, and you get to use your browser of choice.

You could also try winpro - that installs and runs windows on linux. You can then use IE in windows, which is running on linux... sounds confusing I know. You get windows running in an x window. It's not the worlds easiest solution but it ought to work if wine or crossover don't work out for you.

I think winpro cost about $80.

There is an extension for Firefox (User Agent Switcher) that allows you to change your browser identification with just two clicks.

THANK YOU!

but its not loading java or something correctly to display the menus on the webpage.

PsypherPunk 11-04-2005 10:40 AM

i know it doesn't really answer the question but if Firefox+UserAgentSwitcher isn't working you could try Opera. i usually find it's a little better at displaying IE-specific pages.

mrh7184 11-04-2005 10:43 AM

i will download and try opera.. as long as its free..

tredegar 11-04-2005 10:49 AM

If you are using KDE, konqueror has Settings-> Config konq -> Browser Identification. So, nothing at all to install!
