Anyone knows how to install DSL USB modem???

I have this Aztech DSL turbo 100 USb modem & I have no idea of to get it running in Linux. I am using Red hat 8 with KDE.

I tried using the internet configuration wizard from the KDE>>system tools menu but of no avail. It has an option of setting up a xDSL connection, but when I select the option & click on the next button, it asks me to select an ethernet device for the connection!!. Why should I select an ethernet card for the modem when it is connected to the USB port?. Also I checked the
USb devices under the KDE>>preferences>>information menu. It identifies my modem as an unknown device. What am I supposed to do?. Please help!.

First of all, a DSL 'modem' isn't really a 'modem' at all. It's more like an ethernet bridge.

USB can still be a bit tricky to configure under Linux. In this case, you need to find out what type of ethernet interface the USB 'DSL modem' really is. You may be able to find that out by looking in /proc/bus/usb/. Once you know that, you may have to build a kernel module for it -- I don't know whether Red Hat 8 includes modules for every possible device you could have (they might very well). Let us know what you find in /proc/bus/usb/?

Here goes...

Well, I checked it out. I opened the /proc/bus/usb/ folder & found two files namely "devices" & "drivers". And also I found a folder called "001". Inside that folder I found a couple of files named 001 & 002.

When I opened the drivers file using text editor, I found the following text-

usbdevfs
hub
96-111: hiddev
hid
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I also opened the devices file but the contents are too big. I will post that also if someone wants to take look at it.

So....

Anyone got any ideas???

another thing...

I also noticed another very peculiar thing. I have a PC with Linux & win98 running on different partitions. My DSL modem has two LEDs on it. On for power & another indicating the link. When I boot into Linux when I havent installed the modem drivers in windows, the link light as well as the power light remains off. But when I load the modem drivers in the windows partition & then boot into linux, I observe that the power light turns on. I am totally perplexed by this. I mean how does installing drivers into windows affect the device's operation in Linux, especially given the fact that the two are on completely different partitions?.

Also I am very surprized that no one seems to know anything about installing a DSL modem in Linux. So how are you guys connected to the internet?. Phone lines?.

sorry pal...

Sorry pal, nobody here really knows nothing about adsl. I have the same problem & I haven't been able to solve it. Forget about this whole thing. I recommend that you stick with Windows or Mac OS> those things are way better then this LInux. However if you can't do that, then you will have to go through this whole thing the hard way & there is no gaurantee that it will all work out. Goto www.flashtux.org & download their drivers. Its a real nightmare if you ask me.

There's tons of stuff on google for this.
In SuSE you just run yast2->network->dsl configuration
and it'll recongnize it and you are done. I assume something
similar exists for redhat.
Windows or Mac better than Linux. Geez.

Try something like this:

Download the RPM from
http://www.mbsi.ca/cnxtlindrv/hsf/ar...ibeta02050500/
probably
hsflinmodem-5.03.03.01mbsibeta02050500-1_redhat.i586.rpm

Then execute

/usr/bin/hsfconfig

This script has set-up the modem. It should detect the kernel
sources say on /usr/src/linux/2.4.18-4GB/build and
built a new kernel module.

Then use kppp on KDE to set up the internet
account using default options.
