Any project feasible for newbie?
 

I understand this is a stupid question, but still happy to know if any useful info exists. One of my friends who is newbie to Linux and programming and she wants to learn how to do it. Despite of books and document available online she needs to read (of course she has to : ), are there any open source project which is feasible for newbie person to participate in? For example, she can write some code and debug it. Maybe not to submit patch, but through reading real code might help her understand Linux and programming better.


I appreciate any suggestion.

Hi,

Something that i have found useful in the past is to just find a simple and small app to "play" with - you don't have to be actively contributing to learn how to program.
One i would suggest is the GIP IP address calculator which is only about 10 files of code and is based on gtk - a really simple app that converts ip ranges and subnets...etc.

It may be small but it is an application all the same.

From here just tell her to browse through freshmeat and pick out things that she likes the look of - she will start picking it up in no time.

PS - there is no such thing as a stupid question - those who tell you otherwise must either be stupid themselves or simply not now the answer to what you are asking.

I've read the source code. It is a good example for self-educating.
