Any Obscure or New Distro's out recently??
Well, I want to know from members about obscure or new "testing" releases of distro's as I am trying out more Linux Distro's.
I just found out about Dreamlinux 3.5 and Wolvix 2.0! Yes-of course I've checked about every internet list I can think of! For instance-where can I get the Debian "Sid" netinstall iso-is there one? Thanks. |
For Debian stuff go to debian.org
To keep track of distros try distrowatch.com or linuxtracker.net you can create your own spins in Fedora |
If you like tinkering give www.sourcemage.org a try. It's similar to gentoo where you compile everything you install. There's also Crux linux, Archlinux, Slackware, etc...

Actually I just spent the last 3 hours trying to install Lunar Linux-I can't think of a worse experience with Linux...Not saying Lunar is bad-it might be good for something-?
I also just tried SourceMage, and another fruitless effort..I couldn't even get it to load up right-kept freezing and was not in any way user friendly. Yes-i checked the MD5sums on both CD's, so that's not it. Thing is, I don't really know whether my machine is a 32bit, 64bit, or both?! It's an HP Pavillion a810n 3300+ AMD Athlon64 , 2.4GHZ.-Says it's both 32 and 64 bit. Mostly I install everything from i386-1686, and x86. Haven't tried any 64bit distro's yet, don't know if I should...? Getting ready to install Gentoo2008 now, if it goes like Lunar and SourceMage did, then it won't get installed either. hey it says you got SourceMage-which one-why won't it run right-freezes at loading amd64....agp during live boot? |
If you find gentoo too complex, try sabayon - it's essentially a pre-compiled gentoo. Before you start on your gentoo experiment, make sure to read their online handbook(s). Just bear in mind that the install will be a lot of work compared to installing a pre-compiled distro and that the benefits will be negligeable if you install all the stuff that comes with other distros.
Yes, your CPU is 64 bit but a 64 bit CPU can run a 32 bit OS, too. |
Which version did you download for sourcemage? The newest one, 0.10.0-test6 I believe is alot more trickier than the stable version, 0.9.6. If you are up to it, download the stable version. I know they claim all are testing versions but they did change the installation routine with the test6 version.
I think the 0.9.6 installation is much better to get the base up and running. Yes,your system is a 64bit machine but get the 32bit OS and you'll have less problems. I had to install on a new machine, C2D and tried test5 and it wouldn't pick up my internal nic (forcedeth) driver, so I installed 0.9.6 and use the Test grimoire and up to date. Also you can get great help from them in the IRC channel #sourcemage. |
