Why not just string them together? for instance, sudo apt-get install gpodder && sudo apt-get install firefox. the reason why you can't do it at the same time is because of security reasons i'm sure.

Or even better, do: "sudo apt-get install gpodder firefox". The apt-get program maintains a database (via dpkg) of installed applications and files; if two instances were running at once, this database could get corrupted, hence the locking.

If you really want to get pissed off at dpkg, try btrfs.
Ugly ain't the word. And yes, I know there are work-arounds.
