Antivirus: AVG or ClamAV ?
 

Hello,

I would like to install an antivirus on my NAS server, running Debian 6.0.8 (Squeeze).

I found several free antivirus solutions, some are out of date, thus I kept AVG (now free for personal and commercial use) and ClamAV (which is OpenSource).

Do you uses (or have tried) one of these solutions?
Do you know which is the best?
Do you have some advices?

I would like a solution that moves infected files to quarantine folder, instead of delete them.

For Linux there really is no need to run an AV. The best thing you can do is keep your system up to date (I'd be switching the system to Debian 7 (Wheezy) sooner rather than later before I consider an AV.

I'm an outlier. I run an anti-virus on my Linux machines because, long ago, long before Linux, I decided that I would never connect a machine to the internet without having an AV.

I used to run F-Prot for Linux, but, for the past few years, I've been running AVG. It's quite innocuous and uses minimal resources.

There is currently no Linux virus in the wild, true. But, when there is, I plan to read about it, not live it.

BUT not as a deamon ( as a AS NEEDED )
seance 2005 i have NEVER seen a virus on any of my linux os's
( and i trawl some of the rather "dark" parts of the web )

now ClamAV HAS found some things in mails from relatives
( i have an Aunt that has a habit of mailing me the chain letter / "cute pics" viruses
WINDOWS VIRUSES !!!
so OpenSUSE and SL6 are not bothered by them
but
my sister and other relatives on windows ??????? - that is there problem

so

in ten years
no linux viruses
no linux rootkits

if you are using a linksys router you have a MUCH bigger problem than needing a AV program


linksys router you say --- Google it it is in the wiled


keep the OS up to date and FIRMWARE code up to date
