Linux does not rely on anti-virus to keep You "safe" from malware, it is more a holistic approach that implements timely updates to possibly vulnerable software, a permission system (you are generally a root user when you log on to WindoZe), a set of safe software you can install, plus apparmor, selinux, "anti-rootkit" software the list goes on, note not all the above are implemented on every distro it is just an illustrative list.
If you are using Windows without an anti-virus software package it is likely you will be infected with nasties sooner rather than later, not so with Linux as it has taken care of the most likely vulnerabilities in it's own fashion, not that it will stop you doing something stupid like downloading untrusted software.
