Red face Another host using IP address, Linux server Static config, DHCP.

Hello
I am new to Linux, I am trying to set up a static IP and then install DHCP, using the gedit/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg eth0 and I put in my IPADDR and others on the config table, I save but when i try to confirm using ifconfig it gives me a different IPPaddress, and I go thru sys-admin-ntwk-activate, it says another host is using the IP address, I have tried using Auto obtain IP and restarted and also used the static but it still says another host is using address. Please I need a step by step help cos I am frustrated!

Thanks

Have you tried pinging the other IP address? That might give you a clue as to whether it is actually in use.

If it's in use by another device, you will continue to have this problem until you take the device that's using it offline or until you try a different IP address.

If you have access to the DHCP server, you can lock-in the IP you want as per Example 20.5 http://www.linuxtopia.org/online_boo...ml#config-file
