can you play the mp3 in a different audio player, such as audacious, xine, or mplayer?

You may need to install decoders, I don't use Fedora...so can't tell you which package(s) you need to install. But most GUI package managers have a search utility, by putting "mp3" in the search field you may get a list of packages that apply to mp3s. In Mandriva, gstreamer plugins are what's required.

You need to go the fedora forum on this site and read the sticky post at the top. Add the repo that the sticky recommends. Amarok uses two engines. Either xine or yauap. If the regular xine program won't play an mp3, then the xine engine (libxine) won't either. After reinstalling xine, mplayer, vlc, etc. use the xine engine in Amarok.

Then it must be the codecs. I am not sure what application you use for package management, but you should use that and look for something with codecs. If you can find mplayer-codecs that would work. All else fails you can download the codecs from mplayer's homepage.

Hope this helps,

Amarok with Xine

I use openSUSE 11.0 and have Amarok with the Xine engine. Before this combination will play it is necessary to remove the xine-lib package if it is installed. This may also apply in your case.
