I'm not very good at Linux but I'll try to help you. Someone who knows more about this can tell you more.
After you have ran alsaconf and alsamixer type
This command saves current settings and you don't have to run alsaconf & alsamixer everytime you boot. Remember to run it as root (well, you can't perform alsaconf either if you aren't root).
