Alsa not working in Kernel 2.6.9

Hi,
I have just migrated from kernel 2.4.26 to 2.6.9 (on slack 10). I recompiled the kernel and alsa is not able to detect my sound card. I downloaded the latest alsa driver from alsa-project and installed the latest lib and uti s also. After ./configure and make;make install in alsa... I ran alsaconf and all I get is an error saying that sound card could not be found...

Please help....
jai

Alsa is a difficult thing. Try recompiling the kernel but using the kernel's alsa instead of your own.

i had issues upgrading my slackware 10 distro to the 2.6 kernel. It would work 85% but either the sound (auidgy 2) or net cards wouldnt work. If im not mistaken one thing i did was added a line to rc.local script that chmods 777 the /dev/snd point and two other dev points(one was for my nvidia video card).
Im not sure if this is "the way" to do it, but I remember when i had this error it was related to UDEV and how UDEV works.

I also remember that you can configure UDEV to automatically apply the correct permissions to the dev points. This isnt a difinitive answer for you but i hope i give you some basis for troubleshooting your problem.
