Alsa not loading in Debian/Sarge

Very new to Linux - using Debian/Sarge with 2.6.15 kernel. Ran into several obstacles which I have been able to find fixes for, but this one is stumping me - after loading Alsa, the system cannot seem to find the sound driver
Can't open output file '/dev/dsp'

It looks like it can read the device (lspci)
0000:00:10.0 Multimedia audio controller: Ensoniq 5880 AudioPCI (rev 04)

But for whatever reason Alsa isn't getting loaded. Installed Alsa using apt-get without any issues. But when I run alsaconf I get "No supported PnP or PCI card found." I apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge here and greatly appreciate any help anyone can provide.

"Sound driver, who needs a sound driver?! Hit it Lloyd!"
"Mock!"
"Yeah!"
"Ing!"
"Yeah!"
"Bird!"
"Yeah!"
"Yeah!"
"Yeah!"

Hi, and welcome to LQ!

What list of loaded modules do you get?
(output of lsmod, please)

And does the Deb-crew actually already provide a 2.6.15?
If not, you'll have to make sure you compiled the proper modules
yourself, you know ....

Cheers,
Tink

Thanks - I was kind of afraid of that. I thought there was probably a good reason to use Debian's kernel instead of the 2.6.15, but my Bad Idea light is broken. Is it a horrible idea to re-install a lower kernel that is provided by Debian (I have a feeling this might be why Alsa isn't working correctly)? Here is my lsmod either way - thanks for your help!

Not a big deal - just recompile your kernel after having
changed the configuration to include ALSA
