alsa libary injecting an echo when using small period size

Hello,

When attempting to capture audio with a small period time such as 22.5ms, a terrible echo is captured into the created .wav file. If I use a larger period time such as 90ms, the echo is not there. In between times have an echo but not to the extent as the 22.5ms.

I have verified that side tone is turned off and can easily duplicate this using "arecord -c 1 -r 8000 -f S16_LE --period-size 180 -d 5 test.wav"

Thanks
