Alsa is broken

For some reason only xine and systems sounds play anything, everything else dislplays:

or some other variant of resource busy. This didn't used to be a problem!

You need to configure DMIX, as shown here.

I'm following their instruction but on step 2 alsaplayer gives me

It looks like something isn't installed right.
