ALSA and EMU10K1 working and yet not working

Hello everyone,

I'm sorry to be posting a soundcard question because there are so many HOWTO's on it, but I just can't get this thing to work.

I am using SuSE 8.1 with 2.4.19GB kernel. I did a Linux only install on a PIII machine with Soundblaster Live! soundcard.

The installation found the card and installed the modules, ALSA v0.9.0rc8 was installed. System information shows the card is there and all the modules are running.

The test sound works, both through Yast2 and alsaconf. I can hear sound when playing sound files stored on the hard drive with XMMS, but the mixer programs (alsamixergui for instance) do not change the volume or balance. The XMMS volume control and balance doesn't work either. The most annoying problem is that I don't get any sound from the CD player (yes the cable is installed and it worked in Windows). I have also tried the command line mixer amixer without success.

This is frustrating since everything appears to be working as far as the system is concerned and yet it doesn't.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jason

Upgrading your alsalib could be something interesting.
Via Synaptic (from Connectiva) you'll be able to do that fast & easy.

Have fun !
