alsa

hello

im a linux newbie and i installed the last version of slackware in my compaq notebook 100 laptop.

sound was not working so i asked my friends what to do, they told me to install alsa and run alsamixer, but:

bash-3.00$ su
Password:
bash-3.00# alsamixer
No mixer elems found

bash-3.00#

alsaconf runs okay and finds the sound card it says that everything is okay
via82xx ... ... ac97 audio controller
but sound is still not working!
my friends didnt know whats wrong so they asked me to do a lsmod *snd and the result is:

Module Size Used by Not tainted
snd-pcm-oss 36704 0
snd-mixer-oss 12152 0 [snd-pcm-oss]
snd-mpu401-uart 3200 0 [snd-via82xx]
snd-rawmidi 12320 0 [snd-mpu401-uart]
snd-seq-device 3812 0 [snd-rawmidi]

soundcore 3396 6 [snd]
snd-page-alloc 4712 0 [snd-mixer-oss snd-via82xx snd-rawmidi snd-seq-device snd-via82xx-modem snd-pcm snd-timer snd]
snd-ac97-codec 52472 0 [snd-via82xx snd-via82xx-modem]
snd-pcm 54504 0 [snd-pcm-oss snd-via82xx snd-via82xx-modem snd-ac97-codec]
snd-timer 13412 0 [snd-pcm]
snd 31268 0 [snd-pcm-oss snd-mixer-oss snd-via82xx snd-mpu401-uart snd-rawmidi snd-seq-device snd-via82xx-modem snd-ac97-codec snd-pcm snd-timer]
soundcore 3396 6 [snd]
snd-page-alloc 4712 0 [snd-mixer-oss snd-via82xx snd-rawmidi snd-seq-device snd-via82xx-modem snd-pcm snd-timer snd]

after that they just told me that my slackware was messed up... and they didnt tell me what to do, only that i could try to update the kernel. but im a newbiew... errr

support for alsa and you soundcard are in the kernel. If you compile the kernel with those devices loaded you can use alsa-util to run alsamixer and unmute your sound (its usually muted by default for some reason, so even if everything works, you have to unmute it.)

Too bad mandrake doesn't use a normal kernel. If you are going to use mandrake, then my suggestion is probably not possible for you.

just in case you wish to do that, and you probably don't -otherwise you wouldn't be using mandrake, here's a link for recompiling a mandrake kernel.

you know what, I'm sorry. The way that those modules appear in the list shows that they ARE compiled into the kernel.

Try getting alsa-util or something so that you can run alsamixer and unmute your channels

That did it for me, thanks.

Another problem, however. I'm using KDE. When I go to run kmix, I get an empty list box. I'm guessing that no mixer elements are found because it's looking at card 0 (my modem?) instead of card 1 (my Dell Laptop's sound card).

How to I get around this?
