Alsa

i have very wierd problem. I tried to configure my soundcard (SBLive emu10k1) in my new gentoo. When I try to use for example xmms, or mplayer, they tell me that there is no soundcard detected. But i hear system sounds (for example while maximizing the window). Does anybody know what is going on?
I have linux 2.6.10 with alsa compiled into it.

Thanks
