all settings correct for internet conection, but ubuntu 7.10 still does not connect

i have set up everything for my internet connection on ubuntu 7.10 but it still wont connect me to the internet. im a newbie... what can i do?????

Ok, first, you need to check if your network card is up, try with

ifconfig -a

-- and post the output from this command

if your card is working, try to ping another machine on your lan, if you don't have a lan on your home, try pinging your router or some place like google.com or something else.

Check your /etc/resolve.conf and make sure you have a DNS server listed.
