all I want to do is play wmv and other win files :(
I have got this to work under SUSE 9. and .10 but in FC4 is seems to be a no go.
I currently have mplayer, xmms, totem, kaboodle, amarok and even realplayer(which doesn't even open)VLC and none of them have worked for me. And yes I have installed the win32 codecs :( I don't know what to do. I mean if I could get this small though huge problem fixed I will have the ultimate sysytem. I just found out about fluxbox too so u know I'm looking for cool ways to jazz it up, too bad I can play wmv, cuz if not I'm gonna have to dust off my old XP cd and join the "machine" again...ok I still don't have a clue on how to get FC4 to see and share files with my XP machines on my network but thats another problem for another thread. Can some kind soul please help a guy out? |
I want to run win apps play wmv too
:( |
How did you install the codecs? Download this package and copy the codecs to /usr/lib/win32. Also make sure you have totem-xine installed instead of the version of totem that uses gstreamer.

http://fluxbox.sourceforge.net/themes.php - themes to jazz fluxbox up.
By locating the styles you can also edit them yourself, changing colours etc. As for .wmv all i did was install VLC and it plays them, although it's buggy and crashes afterwards quite alot.... whichever player you settle on, get all of it's codecs/plugins. thigns like Mplayer (tried that?) normally output an error when they cant play a format, put the error in LQ search/google see if you can identify a solution. |
thanks for the replies guys. I guess this is just part of the whole linux thing, but me being a n00bie its killing me I have been messing around with this problem for 2 whole weeks and have gotten nowhere :(
I have heard of WINE before, but I have never used it . I'll give it a spin thugh I hope its not gonna make me wish I didn't. Do I trash all of my codecs and players and start over? And how would I do this? yum remove ________ ? I have a realplayer that shows up and doesn't work as in it doesn't even open, I have tried to "remove" it and it doesn't do a draned thing! It says theres nothing there. I don't really wanna reinstall FC4 but I'm thinking starting with a clean slate would be a good idea. Can someone give me some better insight? As for the fluxbox, its taking some time getting used to but I love the fact thats its so lightweight, and nice on the eyes. My friends are like wow whats this u have here, hey thats not windows! I still have no idea how to install the docapps for fluxbox but I 'll figure it out sometime soon, hopefully. |
anyone? I just wanted to know if I should scrap and remove all of the players and codecs and reinstall them? And is there a certian order to the installation? Like codecs first or something? What gives.

If the codecs were installed via rpm, then uninstall the rpm. If they were install manually, just delete all the contents in /usr/lib/win32 (assuming thats where you installed them) and copy the new ones there. Also make sure you apps know where to look for the codecs by checking their configuration settings. RealPlayer does not play some MS media types on Linux due to licensing issues.

Try downloading Gxine. I know the slackware package comes with wma and (I think) wmv codecs, but I'm not sure if the rpm or whatever has them too.
