All I need to make the switch
There are no linux drivers for either my sound card (VIA AC'97)
or video card (s3 ProSavage DDR), what can be done to make them work? I have Fedora Core 1, which I like, but I absolutely need these. I'm unfortuantely a windows2000 systems admin and I need to be able to see windows machines and printers on the network. I briefly read something about Samba, anybody have any more information on this? It's also too bad I can't find a terminal emulator with Viewpoint A2 Enhanced encoding, or I could actually start switching some of the users machines to Linux. From what I see of Fedora, all the OSS office application are very similar to windows apps, and are compatible with MS office files. Sorry for so many questions in one thread. |
I have a box with (a somewhat newer one i might add) that has a via ac97 sound card that works fine with Linux. Also, I have an ancient (266MHz) Dell Optiplex GXa that has a S3 ProSavage vid card. Both work fine. But I do use Mandrake 9.2 (XFree ver 4.3-23 is what I use). I also have Alsa 0.9 that seems to be able to work with via ac97.
To be honest, though, I don't use Fedora so I don't know what type of sound and x server versions they normally use (I wouldn't suspect it would be too different than Mandrake since Mandrake is a RPM-based Distro like Fedora). |
If you are a admin you should know that the driver isn't a ac'97 driver...if you don't know what your sound chipset is you need to find that out :).
for your card you probably should search for savage drivers, not prosavage ddr or whatever. A lot of linux drivers are placed in the same file and when you install it it should configure the driver for your card. I don't have your card and have not installed drivers for it but that's my best guess. |
