ALL GTK APPS do a segmentation fault when X win in monochrome

when i run X WINDOWS in 640x480x1 VGA MODE (outdated)
i run firefox, gimp, anything that uses GTK
and a terminal pops up floods with seg faults and
the app disappears about 5 seconds later
but if i am in 16bpp (65536color) no seg faults
what is up?

That looks like a bug, my friend. That could be your X11 server, your GTK version, a patch that your distro applied. Try upgrading your distro first.

Based on your posting history, I would assume that you are familiar with the package management on your distro...
Of course, you can always get the latest directly from the maintainers.
