I has been a while since I've used an onboard GPU for anything 3D on Linux. I also didn't think the Mesa drivers were capable for decent 3D rendering, but I may be mistaken.

Do you have an NVidia based GPU you could try in the system? It will mean installing the NVidia drivers and re-testing the game.

For someone new to Linux you have your desktop setup quite nicely!

In short, I think it may be a limitation of your onboard graphics chipset and driver support.
