Age Groups of Current Newbie Generation - Poll
 

I would like to conduct a small poll if I may. I would like to see what the overall age group of the current generation of newbies is. I am thinking that it is the younger crowd but I want to see if I am right.

Please be truthful in your answer, I want this to be as accurate as possible. Who knows I might write an article for Linux Journal about the results. This should be your current age if you are a newbie.

If you would like to explain how you got started in Linux, then by all means post your story. I would love to hear all about it. Those of you who wish to participate but arn't newbies, I will be posting another poll if there isn't on already to see what the overall age when members got started in Linux.

Also your never to old to start using Linux. So give it a try if you haven't already. Cheers Everyone....!

You are right at that. We are all newbies, and there is always something the learn but I want am just trying to find out what the age group that he current generation is starting to get into linux. Me I have been using Linux since I was between about 10 and 12. Currently 24 and I still learn new things about Linux everyday.

Tell that to Mr. Linus Torvalds.

Well, Linus just programs the kernel. There are many other aspects to using a Linux distribution. I mean, he can't possibly know everything there is to know about Linux and even then, he started the Linux kernel, he hasn't written all of it. A lot of it is contributed by thousands of people around the world. You really think he'd have the time and knowledge to code everything in the kernel and know all the hardware specs the kernel supports? I doubt it.. so Linus is yes, still a newbie as well. ;)

By the way for the purposes of this poll, I know there are those of you that are wondering.... A newbie by the polls definition is those who have only been using Linux for less than a year.

But of course as is pointed out, we are all newbies in something... Only just recently I learned of a new Linux Server app called SugarCRM... Still checking it out and playing around with it. Also decided to try apache2 (6 months into Apache2) and I am loving it... Been using apache1.0 and Apache2 is why better. I recommend that if you are going to setup and apache server install Apache2.0

I know it is isn't polite to bump a thread, but would it be possible to request the poll to be a sticky until the end of month so that I every on who enters Linux Newbie thread will see it and vote.

I'm 12 and I started figuring about linux at 9 when my crappy windows installation got a "corrupt update" (worm.32.tool) Started with Damn Small, and then moved into Sabayon (in which I am now) and I'm starting LFS. :)

Awsome, It's fantastic to see the younger generations below 20 years getting to Linux. Maybe it will be your generation to give Microsoft the boot if it isn't the current older generation.

One thing I would recommend... :D Get yourself some extra computer set yourself up a Production "Playground". Best fun you will ever have. That is if you are hardcore geek as I am. I however wish I would have been able to bring my servers with me to South Carolina. They are all in Wyoming right now, not doing me much good there.

I certainly agree about crappy windows. Where else would you get a message that IE must be closed for some alledged illegality when in fact, it isn't even open? To answer the poll, I'm 74 and these hands were 55 when they first touched a keyboard. I started out by buying an ancient CPM based machine. CPM was already old by 1989, but I was new to computers at that time. I got that machine and books and magazines out of the library with which I taught myself how to run it. A couple months later bought a used xt that had dos on it. Then 10 years later in 99 I bought a used 486 and a copy of win95. What I'm running now is a used Compaq Pentium 3. It had NT on it, but I took that off did a clean install with win98 se. This is my maiden voyage with DSL. It's running in RAM on this rig, which has 440 megs. I would have been here sooner using Linux, but I had heck of a time getting on line. That had been a real struggle for me. I'll be reporting that tidbit in a different thread as there had been lots of people responding to my problem with kind advice, so I have to let them know how the problen was solved.
