after fresh install of Ubuntu 14.04 everything works except sound - Acer Aspire 11

This is very frustrating, I am not super computer geek but am able to google potential solutions on google.

All potential remedies so far have failed.

This is what I get when a put Alsamixer in the terminal

│ Card: HDA Intel PCH │
│ Chip: Intel Valleyview2 HDMI

and in the middle is two 00 and S/PDIF

If I go Aplay -l in the terminal, I get this.

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

I hope someone out there hears me.

Thanks

Looks like you have the wrong sound card selected. In alsamixer you have to hit the F6 key to swich between soundcards. Linux will see your HDMI devices as sound devices and you probably just have one of them selected as the default. You can change this by selecting the correct output device for sound in the Ubuntu settings.

OK thanks for the advice

I just went to Alsamixer nd on hitting F6 these are my options. Default is currently selected.

(1) default
(2) 0 HDA Intel PCH
(3) enter device name...

I have tried selecting No 2 HDA intel and it didn't give me sound

Here are the outputs for aplay -l I think they might be relevant.

$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

I am sorry, This whole thing is new to me, I'm only finding out how it all works.
The other thread is the one.
