Advice please!
 

Hello to all....this is my first post!

I have been learning Redhat Linux 7.3 for about 2 months now and have apache running on it behind my firewall. I have several virtual servers running and feel comfortable with what I am doing now, but..

I want to run Redhat Linux with Apache, mySQL and PHP servers ('cos I have a forum I want to host).

I haven't had much luck getting PHP to work properly and have decided to reinstall everything on the Linux box.... :D

Firstly, what versions of the above do you recommend I run - are the newer versions easier to install and run?? What experiences do you all have running the above??

Secondly, is there a way of installing all of the above at Redhat installation time, so that it all melds together nicely and actually works (because I don't know enough about Linux to find faults in the system very easily, or quickly!)

Thirdly, I have been using WU-FTP as the FTP server - is this the easiest/best to use??? I will want to allow friends to FTP their pages to my server...

My system / network spec is:

P166 running Smoothwall firewall v1.0
PII 450, 320MB RAM, 17GB HDD, running Redhat Linux
P4 2GHz, 512MB RAM, 60GB, running Windows XP

Sorry for asking so much, but I really want to get this running now!!

You can install Apache, MySQL and php all at installation time. When installing choose the option to select individual packages, and you'll be able to ensure they're included. There's probably a mod_php binary or something that you'll need to integrate Apache and php. You still will have to configure MySQL after installation i.e. add users, db's and tables et cetera. It might be in your interest to get the latest version of Redhat as they'll probably include a more up to date version of the above programs. You can download iso images at www.linuxiso.org.
I don't use php so I can't comment on that, but I do use MySQL, Apache and Tomcat(for servlets,and jsp) and have been pleased with it. I don't host others sites, so I don't use an ftp server. Make sure you get the latest version of wu-ftpd and make sure you read all the security notices, and keep on top of it.
