Advent laptop... no sounds.

Hello all.

I have an advent 7086, but I cant get any sound from it. actually im not sure what really to do. still a complete noobian.

Its using the sis onboard chipset, so I guess the sound system is sis as well.

Not sure where to go, what options to pick or what commands to use.

any tips are always welcome.

Something you can try while waiting for a sound guru to reply:

Often, if you are using the Alsa sound drivers, the volume is turned all the way down by default. Open a shell and type "alsamixer". It should open a crude graphical display of sliders for each sound function. Use the arrow keys to select a slider, and the up and down keys to adjust volume. In the top left-hand corner it may say "(off)"; hit the "m" key to turn each slider on.

If that does not work, you will have to tell us which distro, what programs fail to make sounds, and probably some other stuff.

Good luck.

SiS boards can ship with non SiS sound chips (mine has an Intel sound chip). What distro did you install on your laptop? Have you tried running alsconf (provided by alsa-utils)? From the hardware specs, the driver should be snd_intel8x0 or snd_ac97.
