Advanced Streaming Format

Hello,

I am new to Linux and have been fighting against a bit of an error all morning. I attempted to access a .wmv file in the early morning and ran into an error missing codec (Advanced Streaming Format demuxer plugin) for my mplayer. I scoured the web and followed suggestions that led me to the installation of the RPMFusion repository and attempting:

# yum install mplayer mplayerplug-in mplayer-gui mplayer-font

Which subsequently bombs on dependency check with numerous libraries.

Doing the following:

# yum install --skip-broken mplayer mplayerplug-in mplayer-gui mplayer-font

Results in

Packages skipped because of dependency problems:
ffmpeg-libs-0.10.6-1.e16.x86_64 from rpmfusion-free-updates
mplayer-1.0-0.140.20120205svn.e16.1.x86_64 from rpmfusion-free-updates
mplayer-common-1.0-0.140.20120205svn.e16.1.x86_64 from rpmfusion-free-updates
mplayer-gui-1.0-0.140.20120205svn.e16.1.x86_64 from rpmfusion-free-updates

# yum repolist
KVM-WIN
RHEL-6-x86_64-openafs
RHEL-6-x86_64-rational-linux
RHEL-63-x86_64
RHEL-63-x86_64-ibm-updates
RHEL-63-x86_64-updates
livna
rpmfusion-free-updates
rpmfusion-nonfree-updates

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

You're running RHEL, which is a server distro, and looking for multimedia? That's like buying an armoured car to use as a convertible :-/.
Yes you need all those and probably a stack more to get watching a wmv.

business_kid is correct
However
for RHEL you can use multimedia
Warning:
INSTALL AND CONFIGURE!!!!!
the yum plugin "yum-priorities"
RPMForge IS INCOMPATIBLE with RHN !!!
if you are NOT EXTRA CAREFUL you will FUBAR the RHEL6 install !!!!

And i do mean be EXTRA CAREFUL !!!

see the red hat documents or
search the red hat knowledge base for installing "yum-priorities"
and for CONFIGURING IT
https://access.redhat.com/search/quick
( you will need to login to the red hat site with the user credentials you set up with the required license)

if you still feel like you want to use RPMForge ??????
with all the WARNINGS

all the multimedia plugins are there
the gstreammer ( good.bad.and ugly)

but if you installed the mplayer program from the mplayer.hqq website
there is a set of mplayer ONLY codecs
they need to be manually installed
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/codecs/
all-20110131.tar.bz2
now they are a tad out of date
2011
they go in /usr/lib/codecs and /usr/lib/win32

also is Bzip2 installed on your RHEL6 server ?

the README is a bit old
mplayer no longer is looking for "/usr/local/lib/codecs/"
and it is a bit "iffy" if /usr/lib/win32 is needed , it might not be needed
It depends on if the xine version you install is looking there or not
