Advanced file renaming/copying

Hi,
I am fairly new to linux and I was trying to find this information in different tutorials but wasn't able to come up with anything releval yet. I'm looking for a way to do some advanced renaming/copying of files using pattern matching. Something similar to sed program, only which works on file names instead of file data.

A second part of my question is, given a list of files in another file, how is it possible to run some particular program on each file in this list? Can this be done in just a single line on command prompt or is a script needed to do the job? Could anyone point me to some tutorial/article about this, or give an example?
Thanks a lot.

-Mike

Hi, sed can handle text stream not only from a file but also input from a pipeline, so it can work on file names either, below are all excellent bash scripting guides, from easy to hard.
