Question ADSL2+ internet connection using D-link DSL-502T modem/router via ethernet cable

Hi guys,
I'm wanting to set up a wired internet connection to an ADSL2+ service and I need to know how to configure the D-link DSL-502T modem/router as supplied by the ISP namely DODO (Australia).
Instructions supplied by the ISP and D-Link only talk about Microsoft OS no mention of how to setup with any other OS.
I'm assuming if I ring their help line I will get stunned silence....
This desktop PC is running Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron.
Please be gentle with me as my knowledge of computers is VERY LIMITED
Regards,
Greg

What setup you would want to do? D-Link adsl router modems have web interface for setting it up. So you should not require much of the software that came up with the it. Default ip address usually is 192.168.0.1. So you should be able to open the web interface with http://192.168.0.1. The manual should have default user and password combination that you should use to login. Most of the other setup is usually self explanatory.
If you could provide more information on what setup you want to do, you could get much better help.

Hi Chaitanya,
My beginner status means I don't know how many ways that this CAN be set up
I'll tell you what I have done so far.......
This PC is owned by my girlfriend, it has a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.04
The D-Link router modem is connected to the PC via an ethernet cable to the network card.
A second ethernet socket is on this PC, onboard network feature I think you would call it.
This router can apparently be connected via a USB cable instead but I have not tried that.
The router is connected to the phone wall socket via a regular phone cable and the ISP supplied inline filter.
In the Network settings window, connections tab, I have 3 items
1. checked box wired connection (eth1) address dhcp
2. checked box wired connection (eth0) address dhcp
3. unchecked box point to point connection, this interface is not connected

Under properties eth1 is set on automatic configuration (dhcp) and other boxes are greyed out.
DNS tab- DNS servers box indicates 10.1.1.1

I tried to open http://192.168.0.1 as you suggested but Firefox could not, timed out repeatedly.
I note the D-link instructions booklet says to open http://10.1.1.1 and when I do that a small box opens, I get asked for a username and password. D-link Instructions say to use default "admin" for both but that didn't work. I tried the username and password my girlfriend said applies to her ISP account but that won't work either.
Don't know what else to do at this point
Regards,
Greg

You are very close to setting up your router if you get the small window asking user and password for administering it. You need a valid admin password for that. The booklet should contain the information you need. Once you have that it should be easy. The booklet should give you the default password. It should either be empty or be password or admin. Try the combination if you do not find any. Unless you are there, it would be difficult.

I managed to sign in to the D-link setup wizard and input what I think are the correct ISP etc details.
I could not get any webpages to open, ADSL LED on router was not lit.
I rang the ISP helpline DODO Australia who, predictably, didn't want to help when I told them about the Ubuntu OS.
So I rang the D-link helpline.
After some checking of modem settings etc that frankly I didn't understand the D-link helper figured out that this ADSL internet can't work at my home.
I use Ubuntu with dial up at my place, I know nothing about ADSL so when I brought my girlfriend's computer to my place to work on it I didn't realise that the telephone line must be set up to use ADSL at a specific address, meaning at my girlfriend's place, 200 kilometres away, groan
I expect to be visiting her in a week or so and then I get to see if all this running around has achieved anything or not.

Yes. Telephone line has to have link for broadband connection. If you power on the modem, you will see a some LEDs glowing. One of them is the Link/ACT, which has to be glowing continuously. If it isnt, it means there is no link on your telephone line. Once you have it, you just need to put in the details of the connection you received from the ISP and you should be up and running on your net.
