ADSL semi-success

I used the tutorial at
xs4all.nl/~pschram/english.html
and I think it worked.

Using adsl-start I connected and the ip numbers that appeared in the output looked exactly like they usually do with my ISP.
I tried pinging a madeup ip and it looked like the output was it trying to find it.

I tried using Mozilla and nothing I typed into the address bar worked. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Andy@DP

Nothing worked, not even an IP address? Try 208.185.179.12 (www.apache.org) and see if you get anything. I suspect the problem is with your DNS configuration. Check /etc/resolv.conf to see if there is a "nameserver" line with the IP address of your ISP's DNS server. Also check the output of the "route -n" command to see if you have a default route (0.0.0.0) to your ISP's gateway. Just pinging a made-up IP address isn't really going to tell you anything. Ping one you know exists and will respond.

Just a question: do you in fact see the

... Connected!

after you type "adsl-start"?

:)

P.S.: I know, I know... it's basically a silly question ;)

I'm trying out a new method and will have tested by tomorrow, will let you know if it has worked.

Yes BTW I have both the DNS nameservers in the correct file, didn't the first time.

Also I didn't see connected!, I assumed no message was good news!

No, no message is bad news.

:)

I assume you did "adsl-setup" before you did "adsl-start"? I'm just asking because I forgot to do this like the first three times I tried to get things to work...

;)

I used pschrams method on the link in the first message. It doesn't mention adsl-setup. Did I have to type that.

Once I figure this out I'm gonna run naked through the streets of Aberdeen!

You didn't say if you can ping an IP address. Try 139.133.7.20, which is the University of Aberdeen (I figured I'd give you a local address). That will tell us if the link is working or not, or if this is a DNS problem. It's not clear from your original message if you could ping, or if the problem was just accessing hosts by name from your browser.

BTW: can you really do that in Aberdeen without getting arrested? I'm moving! :-)

Andy@DP 08-19-2003 12:14 PM

Thanks for the help you guys, I've solved the problem now. I used both IP's you guys gave, thanks for those!
MacKtheHacK, Uni of Aberdeen. Bad move, I go to the other uni, the better more world renowned one, Robert Gordons. I'll let you off but if you move to Aberdeen I'll kick ur naked butt, LOL ;)

Sorry Andy, I just did a quick host search and used the first one I found, even though I'd never heard of them before. I have heard the name of Robert Gordon before though.

So what was it you fixed?

Andy@DP 08-20-2003 04:32 AM

I used the sourceforge script speedtouchconf with a minor alteration. The script kept exiting with a QUITTING FOR DEMO message so I commented out these lines and it worked!

I also used the beta version of the Speedtouch drivers from sourceforge as well.

I must admit that I had help from another forum member who I emailed about his success with installing the drivers and we worked out together what the problems were.

Hope that helps, if anyone needs a more detailed guide with correct files/changes email me and I'll be happy to help!
