Cool ADSL reconnect - without rebooting

My linux mandrake 9.1 server shares my ppp adsl connection to the rest of the network.
Now and again the server goes down. Either it disconnects or stalls.

I require the server to reconnect.

I have been reading in to how to configure it to do so.

It is said all you need to do is add "persist" to the config file for the adsl modem.

It is present already.

Ideas of what is causing it/or solutions would be great.

Thanks for reading

note: using shorewall, when it/if it does reconnects, shorewall (firewall) might need restarting manually. No idea though.
Just thought I would add.
