Adobe Air, minimal install and onto a USB Stick

Firsttime visitor and to be frank, a first time Linux guy.

I'm looking on using Adobe Air on an low specced machine and preferably running from a USB Stick. At present, I've tried using Ubuntu Live USB and had some good results - but I'm looking for the most skinnest setup to allow Adobe Air to do its thing without various other processes taking up valuable processing time. And to make things fun, its all got to run from a USB Stick.

Now I know this might be pretty specialised but some extremely good pointers for me would be extremely beneficial, e.g. running other distro's from a USB key and persisting, what shared objects are required by Air (e.g. must I install all of gnome or can I get away with a subset) and what minimum spec has anyone achieved (past the official stats).

At present, I've managed to get things working with a standard Ubuntu but it doesn't perform that well considering the hardware its on. I've managed to install a minimal Debian from the Netinstall and from a USB key - but it doesn't (seem) to utilise the spare space on the USB Stick to allow other elements to be installed, e.g. GNOME or Fluxbox, in order to add the other additions to the key. Finally, I understand the Linux OS utilises something called a 'swap' space - if so, how would this work with a plain old USB key? Clever Partitioning?
