adduser - add the user name

I have added some users but forgot to add their name (adduser -c "User Name"). Is there any way I can add the name now without editing the /etc/passwd file?

The distributions are: RHEL 4.x and RHEL 5.x

Thanks.

Did you try it? I can't tell from the man page whether this can be done for an existing user account, but perhaps you should try it:

Code:
# useradd -c "John Smith" johnsmith
See what happens. Chances are it will only error out if it can't be done this way. By the way, editing the password file isn't that difficult or risky.
