adding windows for wine


is there a way to install windows 9x/ME on to a seperate partition (so i can get wine to run it) without over writing my my MBR?

i don't think you need windows with wine. it is my understanding that wine acts as a windows installation(compatability layer)(taken from winehq) to allow windows apps to run under linux. check out the site.

Wine works better with original Windows files. The installation will trash your MBR. Back it up to floppy:

dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/fd0 bs=512 count=1

This floppy will boot like your regular mbr.
After installation, copy it back:

dd if=/dev/fd0 of=/dev/hda bs=512 count=1

Be careful, something as small as forgetting the 'count=1' can mess up your hd.

i already run wine, this question isnt really wine related so the wine site is no good for me.
