Adding a WinXP printer on network to Linux
 

Folks

I have a WinXP Pro system with an attached and shared HP Deskjet 995c connected via the USB port to the windows machine. The WinXP and the new Linux (Mandrake 10.1) are both on the network and talking to each other

WinXP = 192.168.0.2
Linux = 192.168.0.25
Gateway = 192.168.0.2

How can/do I set up the Linux/XP box to share the printer so I can print from the Linux machine. What must be installed and HOW?

I wish to print from Office @Linux box and from command line @Linux box.

Well although I can't answer your question I can give you insight on learning a bit more... (and if you don't want to learn anything just disreguard this post :) )

You have to do what people call, making the printer shareable. Just like you can make your windows computers share files. The tough part is getting windows and linux to talk to each other. Some people use dedicated print servers. They are kinda neat and you can look at a few on www.ebay.com

But, of course, you can do this without spending any money. You have to use linux to install a print server and a way to talk to windows computers... google search CUPS to see what that is about or try to find it in your GUI on your linux distro... Which I am assuming you are using a GUI.

You can also try to find the information on google by searching something like "printer share linux and windows"... Its important to learn how to look for information without just getting it off of people in a forum. :) Just trying to help

Thanks for the pointers. I have looked at the docs around on the web, from what I see it is SAMBA and CUPS but I cant find a detailed step by step doc hence the question here.

I am using KDE.

I am also planning to run my Linux box (or another) as a firewall & router attached to a dedicated ADSL and wireless access point so am learning a lot quick :-)

Please note: Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows NT, Windows 95, OS/2 Warp Connect and OS/2 Warp 4 clients don't need any extra software in order to run talk to a Samba server. These OS's come standard with TCP/IP which is all you need.

Thanks I am downloading the pages now to read. I afound info on the net about setting up a firewall.

Here is my plan.

To use a ADSL modem connected to my wireless router. connect the Linux box as the firewall and all my WinXP machines to use that as the gateway, the Linux box would be the print server with the printers connected to it, another Linux machine on the network would have to print to a printer shared on the WinXP machine.

I need transparent routing through the network, i.e any machine on the network to be able to go direct to the internet via NAT on all protocols I set. So network machine A can pinf, ftp, telnet without going through a proxy.

Your wireless router isn't a firewall either?... Would be so much easier that way and thats the way wireless routers are usually sold.. as firewalls.
