Adding a USB HDD

Hi
I have an RHEL3.0 server. I want to mount 1 TB USB HDD on my server. I cannot use it on it.
I have fdisk and mkfs ext3 form a RHEL5.0 server which allows the HDD.
But how do i do on the RHEL3.0 Sever?
