Adding a ISP mail account

I want to access my ISP mail account via the terminal. How can I add an e-mail account? Ideally, I would like to use the 'mail' command to send and receive messages via scripts.

These are questions for your ISP if the allow such things. I'm sure you can simply use telnet to login, read your mail, send but its kind of cryptic. Why not just use a command line pop/imap client on your own end, like mutt or pine, etc?

And about adding a mail account, well, that's another question to ask your ISP, most nowadays give ISP subscribers up to 5 or so.. some make you pay extra..

Personally, from the command line and such, I would suggest using fetchmail. It is a simple install and the confi is one simple .fetchmailrc file in your own home directory.

I think the key issue skibud2 said was that he wanted to use the "mail" program and not pine or balsa or mutt or whatever.

That's why I mentioned "...or whatever" as the poster isn't very clear on his setup nor what he really wants. He can use the "mail" command without using his ISP email if he really wanted to, but he never specified any details to go by.

amfoster,

You nailed exactly what I was looking for. I am setting up my computer to use fetchmail with sendmail now. Thank you both for your help!

Mike
