should the command be just

fdisk /dev/hdb

I have tried that and get unable to open /dev/hdb

Is there anyway to check to see if the drive is there. I watched the configuration screens during boot up and it definitely sees the drive.

I just put a new HD in my box but I used an old win98 boot disk to FDISK and FORMAT the drive before I even booted up the computer. When I rebooted Mandrake saw the disk just fine, but I have to mount it yet......
Hope that helped.....

radon,

I was thinking about trying that. What format did you use. I am very perplexed. It appears during the bootup scrolling - I see Maxtor appear (my other drive is a Western Digital). But when I run Hardware Browser it doesn't appear. I did notice that the original drive is ext3. Should I try that in the advice provided ba a slacker?

I'll try to see if I can get a Windows Fdisk to see it.

I just tried the Maxtor setup CD, which only had Windows formats on it. I configured the partition as one partition and formated it and then rebooted. Still having the same problem - not being recognized using

fdisk /dev/hdb

Any other ideas?

what do you get if you do
fdisk -l

this lists some information on all the disks/partitions it sees. Does your second drive appear?

No. I just read something on the Red Hat site about a guy having trouble with a 160G ATA/133 drive and I think he indicated using parted instead of fdisk worked. I am now trying to figure out the parameters for parted. Any clues?

vegeta-nc,

No. I am using a DFI Infinity motherboard that supports ATA/133. Do you still think I need to use the card?

If it came with the drive and you have enough PCI slots, you might as well. But you might have to recompile the kernel with that card support.

I didn't get one with the drive, but I think I may have one in my hardware stash. I about to crash so I'll have to pick it up tomorrow. darn ... I was hoping this wouldn't be a multiday thing, but looks like that's where I'm headed :~(
