Ad blocking function available/necessary for Linux?

I read this article today that says the AVG program has developed a way to block ads that track and build customer profiles on people. I have heard that Linux computers are virus resistant, but I wonder if they are tracking resistant too? Can we use AVG or is there a non-AVG way to block those companies from tracking us online?

Firefox extensions Adblockplus, Noscript, Ghostery
Chrome Adblockplus, Ghostery
apps like privoxy
block 3rd party cookies
Browse using Incognito mode

lots of different ways to do the same thing without using something that slows down your computer.

Thanks!

That was a kick ass reply. Thanks for putting all that together for us.

A good hosts file helps too.

Oh FCOL not the Stone Age hosts file argument again...

still don't see what the big deal with using a host file is all about. It works. I have ran both with and without and didn't notice any speed difference. Heck the two decent adblockers on Android both just download host files.

A hosts file ate his ham sandwich in 1995 and he is still upset about them. :)

I'd add privacy suit to that list too.

With modern computers speed isn't the issue here but I don't see why I should rehash so I'll recycle what I said before: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...0/#post4610694

Actually I use a hosts file to speed up my computer. I put in the bad ones to 127 as well as common 30 or so that I normally visit to the correct IP. It may only save a few seconds a week but I feel more secure knowing what I want blocked is being blocked. (at least by name)
