Activating swap partition early in install

Hi there I posted a question about getting a kernel panic when trying to install Mandrake 9 and RedHat 8 on a Prosignia 500 with the mem=XXM option set.

I got no replys so I'm moving on to a different tack.

How can I get the swap partition turned on early in the install process.

My current RH7 uses sda5 as swap so I tried to alt F2 and type the 'swapon /dev/sda5' command after the scsi disks are detected by the installer but get:-

swapon: swapon: No such file or directory

ls of /dev shows lots of fb devices fd mem ram tty's etc but no sd's

Can I make the sda5 visible in the /dev some how

Would using a kickstart floppy help and if so what config would be best on it.

I would rather force the kernel to recognise the extra ram can this be done from the installer console.

Thanks for your help

I just tried making a swap part on a floppy and then issued the swapon command and the installer picked it up and started thrashing my fd0. Got a lot further in the install before I had out of memory.
I might try 2 floppys next. If some one can't come up with a fix for the mem detect prob.

Success to a certain extent check out this bug report from RedHat

http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/...g.cgi?id=36940

I used mem=exactmap mem=640K@0 mem=143M@1M

Install starts an will proceed in text mode but wont recognise the onboard video which is ok because I've got other video cards that should work.

This only works for RedHat 8.0 Mandrake 9.0 just freezes with those mem options.
