This is my first post so be nice please.

AcidRip seems to be real nice and works real well. I have only one problem and not with the install instead it is with the Aspect Ratio. I riped a movie last night (lavc with lame mp3 set to 160) and everything seemed to be going well before I went to bed. When I woke up this morning to check it out I noticed that the Aspect Ration was incorrect. I did use the auto crop option and made sure everything looked good in the preview before I pressed start button. I think it might have something to do with the fact that I am using a NTCS DVD instead of a PAL. If anyone can help me out it would be greatly appreciated --- Thanks Justin

I get the best results if I set my own crop and aspect ratio's. Usually when I let it auto crop, when I make the movie double or full size I get a slight green bar on the bottom, so by cropping it just a tad it fixes that.

What settings did you have when you started to rip the movie and how did they end up ?

As far as what setting I used and how they turned out let me explain myself. First off I’m pretty picky I care more about quality then size ( but not enough to just keep the riped VOB’s ) because I end up watching them on my 51 in HDTV ( and no I don’t use Svideo or TV out on my video card I use a transcoder that converts the RGB on the VGA out to YpbPr ) I usually set my dvd rips for around 2.1 gig ( three CD’s ) each and they usally end up at around 1.6 gig in Linux because everything is made for PAL. I’m not that new to Linux ( around 1 ~ 1.5 years now mostly just messing around ) but a am new to riping DVD’s in Linux. I have riped many dvd’s in windows using Gknot but I hate windows so I am learning how to do everything in Linux. I just ended up setting it up using the standered settings in AcidRip and changed the filesize to 2100 mp3 options to abr:br=160 and used the lavc codec with a second pass. The PQ looked real good except for the aspect ratio I would go as far as to say it looked as good as the windows/Gknow/Divx5 rip of the same movie. Hope I made sense --- Justin

Usually when I'm ripping I go for good quality with the smallest size I can get it at. And when cropping, I just shave off a tad so it doesn't take off too much of the viewing screen.

But basically I just first let it detect then I just kind of judge myself on my own settings. You can set the crop settings and such then preview it to see how much its going to take off and such.

Cool that sounds like it might work for cropping. But my biggest problem is with the Aspect Ratio. I think I have to scale the image correctly. I think AcidRip is leaving it in the Anomorphic enhanced state, you know16 by 9 so the picture is stretched out horizontally. I know DVD::Rip fixes this with the zoom feature but I would have to rip the whole dvd to the hard disk to get the settings I would also prefer using mencoder/lavc/abr mp3’s as opposed to transcoder/XviD/cbr mp3’s. There has to be an easer way to figure this out. --- thanks for any help --- Justin

Bascially when I'm setting the initial size of the movie with the scaling, I usually make mine with a Width of 600 and I leave the Height at -2 which usually makes the movieits normal scale to size ratio if I either select to rip the widescreen or regular version off the dvd itself.

Liek Drew said, all the aspect ratios are worked out automatically. If you've not set the width and height yourself in mencoder and instead use the -2 option instead then the actual aspect of the output file is determined by mencoder and NOT my program. the -2 option will make mencoder take into accoutn the cropping values and original aspects and everything, and scale the output to te right size. Naturally putting in a set width AND height will fix the aspect in stone.

well that's the idea, but you should eventually get now understand what the options i've set actually mean and make changes as you see fit. Mencoder is a pretty verstaile program, and you can't get the best out of it unless you understand what's happening and why ceratni values are what they are.

do you have a faq with all the commands and what they do, other then the man docs.

ya I know, I ment to aske for a faq on mencoder. thanks for the links

mencoder and mplayer have teh same documentation as they share 95% of the same code and funtionaltiy
