acerpower200 and ubuntu 10.04
 

well hi all im allen,i recently aquired a acerpower2000 and it was a mess the dvd rw ribbon was broken and the computor came from iraq,my nephew got it then gave it to me..he was instructed to wipe the drive clean..so when i got it..it was a mess.no dvd rw drive no keyboard no mouse,now being it was my bday i asked family for a liteon drive "external" a keyboard n mouse and dug around n found a old huge display that would work.next was a system..i tried using my disk but microsoft nag popped up asking for this and that.and my disk didnt match the acer system.the hardware is different..so i dug around and found a ubuntu disk i had ordered long time ago and wala i found it..dusted it off and crossed my fingers n put it in.next came the partition and i deleted whatever was on the 350 gig drive and created a new partition,and installed ubuntu.all went well.no issues no problems at all,verses all that junk microsoft was asking ,please type in this please do this..i even called them..geesh you'd think they would flash back to when they were not a huge corporation..and treat people with some respect.but they didnt..and i couldnt install win xp or another system as i didnt have a new disk just the one that came with my dell.so i was up the creek so to say.nice acer fast too.but now no system..so i installed ubuntu.. and wham it went just fine..no issues no problems and no foreign ladies that screamed over the phone..i went on to install macbunto . and it works great now..although im sure theres more i need to install, and set up..so now im a ubuntu user..and so much for microsoft..the computor seems to work great..so far,,but ok im sure i should ask what should i install next?its a new copy..new installation..and to me a newish computor..im not quite sure how i can install new acer bios,new chipset etc.as the id number and all the other details on the sticker arent applicable anymore.good info..but that system is gone now..
well anyway hi everyone..im a disabled dude..live alone..use elec wheelchair prn as needed..from back injury,but im good.all is well, thanks ubuntu for not being like microsoft!!!!!..they made me feel like i was a thief or something..i was getting by on a old dell..and that is barely getting by..and it was real nice that he gave me the old computor which is newish to me..
seems to work fine now..:)

thanks! i decided to leave both the bios and the chipset as is..it works so,id better not mess with it..i dont want to kill the machine..seems to work ok so far..

Hi. That is exactly what I was going to suggest, if your computer is working find then don't need to install anything else other than the security updates you will get from Ubuntu each week.

However everybody uses their computer for different reasons, I use mine mainly for entertaining so Music, videos, eBooks, Pictures and Movies are all storage in my hard drive. To use these files I had to install codecs in Ubuntu, I installed VLC for media playing, however the Ubuntu stock Totem and Rhythmbox are fine for that too.

If you wish to install any more software you can do that by using the synaptic package manager in Ubuntu that way you wont break your system.

hmm thanks yeh i just left the bios and chipset managed to get the audio setup,and that works fine.but i wanted to mention the terminal,i understand cntl alt -t pulls it up, i went online and found some topics about installing new software that mentioned the sudo apt. get or install .and was wondering what exactly does the "sudo mean"
i get what it implies and all and i understand that rather than most windows applications this system calls for detailed step by step manual type installation
which is kind of a longcut way to install remove or other things ..its not that tuff im sure and im sure i'll eventually get it figured out..
for now at least it works..and i have audio and video,.however i do want to add additional ways for audio as i have a 49 key midi controller to hook up, then comes a vhost thats compatible with 12.04 and some vsti's that will work with the ubuntu 12.04 sys.
any suggestions on this?btw i type horrible.so ,please excuse the possible typos hope you read typonese!! haha,thanks troN-0074 good to be here!

In my experience there is hardly a need for sudo apt-get ...; the only time might be when your graphical environment isn't working (or available as on most servers) but you've passed that step. apt-get is basically the terminal alternative to 'software center', 'synaptic' and 'update manager' and the result of using it is exactly the same.

Normal users are not allowed to install software in system directories; you need 'administrative privileges' for that and under Linux this is often referred to as 'root permissions'. Some distributions have a dedicated root user for this type of work and other distributions use the 'sudo' approach. 'sudo' (temporarily) gives the user root permissions so the software can be installed.

thanks, well thats handy to know,no need to worry about unwanted programs and malicious software being installed without my permission..
